These papers include photos and maps of the supposed canal route, correspondence with Bob Evans and with Hugh Torrens about the purpose and route of the canal, and notes on Sutton Thomas Wood (who was the prime mover in the project and entered a partnership with Sir George Bowyer, the landowner). The notes were given to Radley History Club by Robert Sephton's family after his death. They cast considerable doubt on the accepted wisdom that the canal was designed primarily to carry coal. There is some overlap between these papers and those at D.83 and D.292, but they have been deliberately kept together as a whole. |
